Judge Eric Allen Marks was appointed to the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, General Division bench by Governor Mike DeWine on February 19, 2021 and was elected to retain the position on November 8, 2022. He is on the ballot this November for a full six-year term. Over the past three and a half years, Judge Marks has presided over approximately 200 civil cases and 80 felony criminal matters in any given month.


Before his judicial career, Judge Marks had a general practice focused on criminal defense, family law, and appellate practice for 15 years. He also worked part-time as an Assistant Public Defender for the Toledo Legal Aid Society for 10 of those years. Judge Marks brought significant trial experience with him to the bench, having directly handled over 1,000 criminal cases throughout Northwest Ohio and more than 60 direct appeals in various fields of law in multiple state appellate districts and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.


Judge Marks holds a Juris Doctor from The University of Toledo College of Law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University, an Associate of Arts from The Ohio State University and is a graduate of Perrysburg High School.   During law school, Judge Marks worked as an extern for Judge Patrick J. Foley of the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, as well as for Chief Judge James G. Carr of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. 


Judge Marks was recently appointed by the Ohio Supreme Court to serve on the Continuing Legal Education Commission. He was elected this year to a three-year term on the Board of Directors for the Toledo Bar Association and has served on various TBA committees and as Chair of the Court of Appeals Committee. Judge Marks is also a member of the Ohio and Lucas County Bar Associations and is a former member of the Maumee Valley Criminal Defense Lawyer's Association. 


As an Eagle Scout, Judge Marks volunteered as an adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America for over 20 years and now serves as an Advisory Board Member for Erie Shores Council. He has held numerous local and regional leadership positions within his church. Judge Marks is married to Renae, and together they have three children that are their pride and joy.
