John has always been an active and enthusiastic participant in community service. From his first game as a volunteer soccer coach, to campaigns for school issues, to the Anthony Board of Education, and now as a member of Waterville City Council, with service on the boards of charitable organizations, John has enjoyed every minute of public service.
John has been a member of Waterville City Council since 2014, and has served as vice-mayor. He has been Chairman of the Public Safety and Public Works Committees, and serves on the Finance Committee. John also represents Waterville on the Joint Fire Co-Op District Committee
which includes Waterville, Whitehouse, and Waterville Township. Previously, he was a member of the Board of Education of the Anthony Wayne Local School District from 2000 through 2008 and was President of the Board for two years and Vice-President. John is a member of the
boards of several non-profit organizations, including Nature’s Nursery and The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio. In 2023, John was appointed by the Governor to the Ohio Higher Educational Facilities Commission.
Raised in Lorain, Ohio, John is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and of the University of Toledo College of Law. During law school, he was a trust officer and director of the trust probate department at the former Toledo Trust Company. After graduation from law school, John was associated with Arthur Young and Company in the tax department before entering the private practice of law. John has been an attorney with Shindler Neff LLP continuously since 1981, concentrating in the
areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration, real estate, business, and tax law, and is the firm’s managing partner.
John and his wife, Debbie, have lived in Toledo, Maumee, and now Waterville, where they have resided for over 40 years. They raised their three children in Waterville, all of whom attended and graduated from Anthony Wayne Schools, and they are active grandparents for their 10
grandchildren. A long-time bass guitar player, John plays rock and roll with a group of local attorneys and judges for an annual charity fundraiser. He also occasionally plays with The Free, a band he started in high school with his bandmates in a garage in Lorain.
John and Debbie are committed to their greater community and are happy and proud to call Lucas County their home.
